Sterling Jr. Sr. High School students visited the school library Jan. 22-23 where each student was able to choose a free book and was treated to a free cookie and hot drink. The sixth annual “warm up with a good book” event encouraged students to “read a latte.”
“Studies show that the more students read, the better their achievement in all subject areas,” said district librarian Amy Brownlee. “Students are more likely to read when they have easy access and select the books themselves.”
Books for the giveaway are sourced through donations, discount purchases, and used bookstores. Community member Lynne Bush donated funds toward the program because she believes in the importance of reading and loves to see programs that promote literacy in a fun and creative way.
The food service department made cookies and Carol Prather’s family and consumer science classes organized and staffed the hot drink bar. This year’s theme was “Narnia,” and the snack station and decor included fun elements based on C.S. Lewis’s famous book series.
Over 300 books and magazines were given away, and students and staff alike shared how they look forward to the event each year.
"Kids are so busy," Brownlee said. "We love taking time to slow down and have a cozy day of reading and chatting about books."
